The IMac started doing this in December, rarely at first, then increasing in frequency. Now, some background as I know I'll inevitably be asked. I was fortunate (or unfortunate one could say) to catch this on video the other night as it seemed to happen 5 or 6 times in a row. Very often, as soon as the grey screen with Apple logo and loading indicator passes and the log in screen appears, it crashes again at this point. Only then will it restart and make the startup sound. I have to go under the desk, unplug the iMac, wait a while and plug it back in. Normally crashes just mean the computer closes down and using the power button restarts it. I can tap it or hold it down for a few seconds (or longer). What's odd about these crashes (based purely on my experience of occasional mac crashes since having a G4 Powerbook and Macbook 15 years ago through various MacBook Pros and now to this iMac) is that although the screen goes completely black (and mouse/keyboard completely unresponsive) the Power button has no effect. Rarely are more than 5 apps ever open at once. Generally, I work on graphic design but also music. ![]() It's an absolute nightmare as invariably it crashes whilst I am doing work. I have a 2013 iMac, intel i7 quad core 3.4GHz, 16 gb RAM, 3TB Fusion drive that keeps on crashing. Unusual iMac crashes happening several times a day Hi, In order to get the screen back up I have to reset the (SMC) 2-3 times before the screen comes back up.Īny help or anyone also else having this issue and has more info, it would be appreciated. The iMac is still on because the fans are still running. When I hold down the keyboard shortcuts after restart, I see the Apple logo once then the screen goes black and doesn't ever come back. In an effort to try and fix the freezing issue I tried resetting the PRAM. Then I updated to Catalina and the problem started all over again. ![]() ![]() This seem to stabilize the computer for about a month and half. Then it happened a few more a couple of days later and I reset the (SMC) again. I did that and it seemed to fix the issue. This happened several times and I called Apple Support they directed me to reset the System Management Controller (SMC). On day one of having the computer I was just browsing the web and installing apps when the a extremely loud knock sound came out of the speakers and the iMac froze for about 5 seconds and restarted. I updated the RAM with OWC 2x16gb sticks and I am also using the factory 2x4gb sticks for a total of 40gb. IMac (Loud Knock Sound) Freezing & PRAM Restart Issue I have recently purchased a 2019 iMac.
